If you make a lot of long distance calls as part of your business or simply to keep in touch with loved ones abroad, then you must be blanching every time you look at your phone bill. Fortunately, there is now a way to make overseas calls at a fraction of the cost, by using VOIP services.

VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. Using VOIP, a telephone or computer with a broadband connection can call another computer or phone for much reduced charges or even for free. To avail of this service, you will have to subscribe to a VOIP broadband phone service provider. Providers claim benefits such as cheaper phone bills and number portability. However, you should check out potential providers carefully before you lock yourself in to a long-term subscription.

For example, although providers may offer plans that have features such as unlimited local calls or free minutes, charges such as long distance and other calling fees may still apply. VOIP broadband phone service providers also hype the portability of your number, meaning that you can keep the phone number you had before subscribing. But not all carriers offer this feature; you may have to specifically request and pay for this service.

Also, services may be less than reliable. If your Internet connection is down, obviously you cannot make calls. This problem may be exacerbated by failures within the service itself. And, since you’re locked in by a contract, it may not be easy for you to change providers if you’re not happy.

Anyway, Skype is one of the top voip providers, you can use it for free or for business. You may want to visit Skype here.
